I work in a wide range of media (sound, photography, video, drawing, poetry) to explore our relationships with nature and place. I am interested in non-human perception and perspectives and how art practice might inform, and be informed, by these considerations.
I use art as a means to gain a deeper understanding of the world and what it feels like to be in it. I aim to create things that are aids to thinking and help in sharing my thoughts with others. Unlike the scientific approach, I want the communication to be “fuzzy” – leaving room for chance, ambiguity and the stance of the viewer. I want to make bridges from the known to the unknown and from one conscious being to another.
I apply these ideas to the environment and question how our knowledge (history, legend and memories) conspire with our sensed experience to affect our perception. I am also interested in the different ways art and science understand the natural world - and what it is to be in it.
I have an MFA in Fine Art (distinction) from Newcastle University and I am currently a PhD candidate in Fine Art at Newcastle, funded by the AHRC Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership.
