Shetland drawings
Drawings made on site at a number of archaeological sites in Shetland, May 2016, each on 1.5 x 1.5 m2 paper
These were presented in an exhibition at the XL gallery Newcastle alongside scientific drawings on the sites plus photgraphs of other similar sites from my collection.
I am interested in the relationship between an objective, scientific understanding of the world and the inner subjective, felt experience. At archaeological sites the quest for scientific knowledge meets the romance of never knowing (but always wondering). The scientific approach appears to offer truth and yet it can be at odds with how we feel. I have been looking for ways to bridge this gap. Rather than thinking of subjects and objects I am beginning to wonder if I should instead think of a series of intertwining narratives – in this case the narratives include: my life, the paper and crayons, the weather, ancient people, and the history of the stones.
